For Immediate Release:                      Ice Safety Advisory

The Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management is issuing a warning, due to recent melting and refreezing conditions and unseasonably cold weather, to stay off all ponds and lakes in the City of Springfield.  Although the weather remains cold, the underground springs and streams are active and ice is not safe to walk on.  Also, the snow cover along the edge of many of the ponds gives a false sense that the ponds are safe to walk on.

A layer of snow covering the ice does not guarantee that the ice is solid and the department encourages all parents and guardians to educate their children on the danger of unsafe ice and to heed warnings posted on signs.  You can access a copy of our Ice Safety Brochure at the following website, www.springfieldcityhall.com, then go to the Parks and Recreation page and click on the ice safety topic in the left hand column.
