SPRINGFIELD FLEX SQUAD CONTINUES PROACTIVE SWEEPS
August 1, 2014 –Springfield, MA- On Thursday, July 31, 2014 members of the Springfield Police Department Ordinance Unit converged on the following streets in the North End area and concentrated on “quality of life” issues. The following streets were targeted: Main Street, Sheldon Street, Jefferson Avenue, Calhoun Street, Ringgold Street, Montmorenci Street, Massasoit Street, Massasoit Place, Church Street, Grove Street, East Hooker Street, Dwight Street, Grosvenor Street and Dwight Street.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “I applaud these efforts by the Flex Squad and the team work exhibited by these city departments to positively affect quality of life issues in the City of Springfield.
The entire team of Springfield Police Department’s Ordinance Unit led by Sgt. John Delaney and include; Officer Keith Fleming, Officer Craig Staples, Officer Mark Kenney, Officer Rafael Vega,Officer Joe Piemonte, Officer William Witherspoon and Officer Steve Tyburski responded to the North End to converge on targeted streets that were picked by Ordinance Officer Keith Fleming. Officer Fleming is the Ordinance Officer that is assigned to Sector “A” and he planned this operation targeting streets with habitual offenders of the City’s Ordinances. Accompanying the Ordinance Squad was the City’s Housing and Code Enforcement Departments led by Housing Deputy Director Mr. Dave Cotter.
The Officers issued 103 City Ordinance Violations for the following: overgrowth, trash, refrigerators left out in the open, unregistered cars, abandoned cars, trash, tires and various other city violations. The officers and crew from Dave Cotter also condemned a house at 35 Grove Street, towed 5 cars, gave out parking tickets, moving violations and abandoned vehicle stickers. The officers and crew also shut down three illegal “Auto Repair” sights that were operating in private citizens front, side and rear yards.
Sector E, (South End, Metro Center and Maple High Six Corners) will be the focus of a sweep next week with Officer Steven Tyburski coordinating the effort.
