MAYOR DOMENIC J. SARNO TO PARTICIPATE IN FOUNDER’S DAY BRUNCH

Individuals and Organizations to be Honored for Their Commitment to Continuous Improvements to Springfield’s Neighborhoods Effected by the June 1, 2011 Tornado

May 30, 2013-Springfield, MA- Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, the Springfield Board of Park Commissioners and the Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management honored The University of Massachusetts’ Forest Service, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, Mass Mutual, the Medical Reserve Corp., Northern Tree, PeoplesBank, Congressman Neal, Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and tornado volunteers at a reception on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at the Carriage House in Forest Park.

It was the wish of Everett Hosmer Barney, Forest Park philanthropist, to be remembered each year for his commitment and dedication to the park system.  Each year a wreath is placed at the Barney Mausoleum and community partners are recognized for providing stewardship in the beautification of Springfield.

Mayor Sarno stated, “This year’s Founder’s Day honorees have provided a tremendous impact in the continued improvements to our neighborhoods affected by the June 1 tornado.  It is from their efforts we can celebrate the revitalization of our neighborhoods, witness trees being planted and overall improvement to the quality of life for our residents.  I am grateful for their commitment to the City of Springfield.”

Patrick Sullivan, Executive Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management stated, “Everett Barney had the foresight to establish the first Park Commission in 1882 and the City is grateful for his generous donation of land to create Forest Park.  I cannot imagine this city without Forest Park.  The Park Commission and the residents of Springfield are appreciative of our “current day” benefactors we are honoring today.  Their continued support of our park system allows the department to ensure the preservation of our neighborhoods.”
