August 6, 2008 - The City has awarded the purchase of four hybrid vehicles to be used by the Parks Department and anticipate delivery of the vehicles in the coming months.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated that he wanted to initiate the use of these vehicles in the Parks Department on a trial basis and hopes to expand the use of hybrid vehicles throughout the city after a study is complete.
“This is another example of the opportunities this Administration will seize to help Springfield Go Green,” said Sarno. “I am excited for the arrival of these vehicles and what it will mean for the overall health of our environment.”
The City purchased the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrids to replace four old vehicles that were in need of replacement. The hybrids were purchased from Stoneham Motor Corporation in Massachusetts.
Ford has touted the 2008 Escape Hybrid as:
* The first vehicle to combine SUV capability with the outstanding fuel economy and low environmental impact of a full hybrid.
* Meeting strict Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV II) and Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) standards.
* Delivering 34 mpg in city driving and using no fuel when stopped or driving at low speeds because the vehicle is powered by the electric motor.
* Being comprised of cloth fabric made up of 100 percent post-industrial waste plastics and polyester fibers that would have otherwise ended up in landfills.
