Anna Hines’ reading and book signing
SPRINGFIELD, MA - October 16, 2007 - Hot off the press is Pieces: A Year in Poems and Quilts, author/illustrator Anna Hines' 55th book in 23 years. Because of her engaging writing style and literary connection with youth, it is no surprise that this prolific children's book writer has won countless awards. Hines will speak, tell stories, and sign her books in a free program at the Forest Park Branch Library on Wednesday, November 14 at 6:00 p.m. The Library is located at 380 Belmont Avenue, Springfield.
A Publishers Weekly critic called one of Hines' works "a poetic, unpretentious story." Kirkus Reviews wrote about Grandma Gets Grumpy, "This slice of real life is depicted with such humor and affection that kids are sure to enjoy recognizing themselves and their elders." A reviewer from Horn Book noted, "The illustrations have a gentle, cozy, and contented feeling which reinforces the mood of this distinctly useful book," in describing Big Like Me.
According to librarian Maeleah Gorman, chances are very good that today's book-reading youth are familiar with Hines' stories, and she is a favorite of many. In recent years, this California author collaborated on books with themes of the outdoors and forestry. Dutton Press, Greenwillow, Clarion, and Harcourt Books have published Hines.
Two recent books, Pieces: A Year in Poems and Quilts and Winter Lights: A Season in Poems and Quilts take Hines in other directions; the format is free-verse poetry and photography replaces drawings. In Hines' spare time, when she is not writing more than 2 books per year, she is especially adroit at needlework, knitting, and quilting. The impetus for this latest work is her love of quilting. A Publishers Weekly critic noted that Hines' quilts are "worthy of exhibition." Other Hines' books with quilting as the subject matter include Whistling and the upcoming 1, 2, Buckle My Shoe
Earlier in the day, in a collaborative effort between Kensington School and the Forest Park Branch Library, Hines will give presentations to the school's children.
Hines will be available to sign books from 5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. She will speak, read, and answer audience questions from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The presentation will take place in the Community Room, which is not yet wheelchair accessible. Refreshments will be served.
The sponsor for the program is the Friends of the Springfield Library, a non-profit agency. The Friends will have copies of Hines' books available for purchase and signing. In addition, children who already own an Anna Hines book may bring theirs in for the author's signature.
