The Mayor's Violence Prevention Task Force will hold a press conference on Tuesday June 17th at 2 p.m. in the Office of the Mayor to announce an upcoming Gang Awareness Presentation for Parents and community members. The event will take place on Saturday, June 28th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at American International College Griswold Theatre.
Designed to help parents identify gang related activity, signs, language, and behaviors, the event will be free of charge. During the press conference, organizers will identify facilitators of the public forum and provide other details.
The community presentation marks the first event since Mayor Sarno reconvened the Citywide Violence Prevention Task Force. The task force is a multi-sector voluntary coalition comprised of more than 70 individuals, groups and organizations. Formed in 1992, the task force is charged with the mission of facilitating activities that mobilize and empower citizens in violence prevention and implement public police to eliminate forces contributing to youth violence.
Mayoral Aide Darryl Moss said the Mayor's decision to reconvene this group, which had been inactive since 2004, will have a direct and immediate impact on the community.
"Historically, parents have been left out of the loop when it comes to youth anti-violence initiatives. That's counterintuitive because parents are the first line of defense," said Moss, a youth advocate. "This program addresses the issues head on and arms parents with important and useful tools."
Information about members of Violence Prevention Task Force will also be available at the press conference.
